The bikes are available for use free of charge. Underneath the saddle there is a slot which takes the 2- Euro coins. On returning the bike the 2- Euro coins are refunded, rather like the system used for supermarket trolleys. Also available at the stands are free maps of the city, showing the location of the terminals and instructions for use of the bikes in English.
The bikes can only be used in designated districts within central Vienna and anyone riding out of bounds is sure to attract the attention of the police. Viennabikes are robustly built weighing around 17 kilos and are conspicuous which should deter theft. They are fitted out with a shopping basket and rear luggage rack. The design for all the bikes, pink and blue, is based on the model for ladies making it easy for everyone to use. The bikes have a three- speed gear shift which is adequate for the relatively flat districts where they are in operation. Studies show that half of all journeys made in the city are short at around five kilometres and could easily be done by bike. In some cases going by bike is quicker and the "Viennabike", unlike other forms of transport, costs nothing and is available 24- hours a day.
